  • Timing: drills to master 7 different footwork rhythms used in West Coast Swing
  • Patterns: footwork sequences to use in WCS, with practicing fitting some of them in to patterns with partners

Evening dance: Hosted by Westie Underground at DanceTown (1574 Walkley Road). Dancing starts at 9:30 pm.

March 28, 2020 – Make a Pass

Location: Second Studio, 738A Bank St., 2nd Floor

Partner recommended – 12 leader & 12 follower tickets only

This session will focus on Maria’s fool-proof method of trouble-shooting patterns and styling in West Coast Swing, with equal emphasis on Lead and Follow responsibilities.

  • Leads will become more empowered to trouble-shoot patterns they’re working on
  • Follows will learn how to make nearly any styling (on purpose or by accident) work
  • Leads and Follows will practice these skills together
  • Time permitting, Leads and Follows will both be able to more successfully execute footwork styling while partnered

Evening dance: Hosted by Westie Underground at DanceTown (1574 Walkley Road). Dancing starts at 9:30 pm.
Separately ticketed.

April 25, 2020 – Leader Focus

Location: Second Studio, 738A Bank St., 2nd Floor

14 Leader tickets at full price + 10 Follower tickets at $10 each.

This session will focus on the Lead role. You’ll learn tips and best-practices for clear, safe, and comfortable leading. We’ll focus on simplicity and efficiency to make the Lead role more effective, fun, and relaxing. Content will be tailored to the needs of the group, but other topics may include musicality, responding to Follower’s requests, managing different follower “types”, etc. We’ll also work on Leader Mindset!

We’ll need Follows to attend in a supporting capacity. Although the content isn’t designed for Follows, it’s always useful to learn more about the opposite role (especially if you dance both roles), and to develop a shared language for discussion with the other dancers in your community.

Evening dance: Hosted by Westie Underground at DanceTown (1574 Walkley Road). Dancing starts at 9:30 pm.
Separately ticketed.

May 30, 2020 – Follower Focus

Location: Second Studio, 738A Bank St., 2nd Floor

14 Follower tickets at full price + 10 Leader tickets at $10 each.

This session will focus on the Follow role. You’ll learn tips and best-practices for confident, pleasant, and creative following. Content will be tailored to the needs of the group, but other topics may include musicality and styling, managing different leader “types”, etc. In addition to mechanical and playful elements, we’ll work on Follower Mindset, because darn, it’s difficult to “just wait”, “just go” and “don’t anticipate”!

We’ll need Leads to attend in a supporting capacity. Although the content isn’t designed for Leads, it’s always useful to learn more about the opposite role (especially if you dance both roles), and to develop a shared language for discussion with the other dancers in your community.

Evening dance: Hosted by Dance Brats at DanceTown (1574 Walkley Road). Dancing starts at 9:30 pm.
Separately ticketed.

  • Learn how to observe, discuss, and give feedback in productive and positive ways
  • Experience the enthusiasm and support of their peers

Evening dance: Hosted by Westie Underground at DanceTown (1574 Walkley Road). Dancing starts at 9:30 pm.

~ Summer Break July & August ~

Level/Pre-Requisites

You will get from these sessions as much as you are willing and able to take, provided that you already dance West Coast Swing.

Participants should have comfort with (at minimum) these 6- and 8-count basic patterns: left-side pass, underarm turn, underarm catch, sugar tuck, sugar push, left side tuck, basic whip, reverse whip, basket/lock whip, fold, left-side roll, basic outside turn (right side), rotating anchors, sugar roll/return. “Comfort” means that you can execute the patterns in at least one role without having to think much if at all about the “how”.

Partners & Caps

Each intensive will be capped at 24 dancers or 12 lead-follow pairs.

Dancers will rotate partners throughout the session.

To manage ratios and maximize use of space for many of the sessions, you must register with an opposite-role partner. It’s as simple as saying, “I’m planning to attend this intensive and I need a leader/follower to register with me – are you interested?”

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required.

About Maria

After growing up dancing jazz, tap, and ballet, Maria found West Coast Swing dancing in 2005 and has taught since 2007. She quickly distinguished herself as a successful competitor, choreographer, and performer (Rising Star, Teams).

Today, her focus is on developing local communities and dancers, as well as choreography and performance. She is an experienced judge at numerous WCS events.

As a teacher and coach, Maria draws on the experience of thousands of teaching hours and extensive professional training, including the exclusive annual Invitational Intensive. She is widely known for her ability to clearly communicate and demonstrate concepts and their purpose, to put those concepts into bodies, and to empower dancers to take control of their own journeys with take-home drills and functional tools.

Maria is a popular workshop and intensive instructor outside of Ottawa; she wants to bring that value home!
